Condition Report:
Worn condition with some yellowing, never framed sale is
“ASIS”. Rip on lower right and rough surface mid lower right. The photo is a
good representation of the condition although there might be some color
variation from the photo to actual artwork

Alexander “Sandy” Calder was born in Lawton PA, father
Alexander Stirling Calder a well know sculptor and his mother Nanette (née
Lederer), Calder was also a well know artist. At 4 years old he posed or his
father who created a sculpture “The Man Cub” which is at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in NYC. Sandy completed his first sculpture at 4 years on of an
Elephant.
In 1909 Sandy attended Germantown Academy in Philadelphia
PA for a short time before the family moved to
Croton-on-Hudson in New York. He was creating brass and wire sculpture
at 9 years old jewelry for his sisters dolls and gifts for his family. High
School years were split between New York and California, he graduate High
School in 1915 in California. In 1915 Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1915 and studied
mechanical engineering over art. After graduation he had many jobs some as an
engineer others not. It was when he was a timekeeper at a logging camp in
Washington State that he got reacquainted with is art side. He started to paint
and shortly afterwards he move to New York City and become an artist. He
enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City and studied and worked
with others. afterword’s at 26 he worked for the National Police Gazette before
moving to Paris France. He marries at 33 and moves back to America to
Connecticut to raise the family.
He is credited for inventing Mobiles (moving Sculptures)
and Stables (solitary sculptures).
Alexander Calder was one of the most prolific Painter,
Sculptor, jewelry maker and theatrical producers who’s are works are worldwide.
He is exhibited in most major public and private museums, corporate park and
public spaces.
Sandy Calder died of a heart attack in 1976 shortly after
a major retrospective opened at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City.
