Groteskes, architektonisches Zierelement eines Kapitells in Form eines Dämonen oder Beelzebub, sehr wahrscheinlich aus einem Kreuzgang. Für romanische und gotische Säulengänge typische Fratze, die wir aufgrund der Formgebung einer Lilie über der Nase der Groteske Frankreich zuschreiben. 

Die Bildhauer in Romanik und Gotik arbeiteten nicht allein mit Material und Formengestaltung, sondern auch mit Effekten, die sie durch das Wechselspiel von Licht und Schatten erzeugten. Ein hervorragendes Beispiel hierfür ist der hier vorliegende Kopf eines Dämons oder Beelzebub in Form einer stark ausgeprägten Fratze bzw. Groteske mit spitzen Ohren, weit aufgerissenen Augen und weit vorragender Nase. Je nach Lichteinwirkung ergeben sich interessante Schattierungen innerhalb des Gesichts, das den Betrachter von einem Kapitell aus mit bösem, furchterregendem Blick anstarrt. 

Teuflische Dämonen sollten dem Betrachter Angst und Schrecken einflößen. In der Nähe ließ sich dann meist eine segnende Geste eines Kirchenpatrons finden, welcher dann für hinreichend Demut sorgte. 

Die mittelalterlichen Theologen und Dämonologen kannten den Beelzebub jedoch auch als Fliegendämon und Fürsten des Reiches der Finsternis. Durch das Anschauen des Beelzebub sollten andere Fliegendämonen entstanden sein.

DESCRIPTION

Grotesque, architectural decorative element of a capital in the shape of a demon or Beelzebub, very probably from a cloister. A grimace typical of Romanesque and Gothic porticoes, which we attribute to France due to the shape of a lily above the demon's nose. 

Romanesque and Gothic sculptors worked not only with materials and shapes, but also with effects created by the interplay of light and shadow. 

An excellent example of this is the head of a demon or Beelzebub in the form of a pronounced grimace with pointed ears, wide open eyes and a protruding nose. Depending on the light, interesting shades are created within the face, which stares at the viewer from a capital with an evil, terrifying gaze. Devilish demons were intended to instil fear and terror in the viewer. A blessing gesture from a church patron could usually be found nearby, which then ensured sufficient humility. However, medieval theologians and demonologists also knew Beelzebub as a flying demon and prince of the realm of darkness. Other fly demons were said to have been created by looking at Beelzebub.
