Early 19th century silk work map sampler by Ann Frances Cocksedge. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1810 or slightly later. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The cream coloured backing silk is dominated by a details map of England and Wales with a portion of Scotland, Ireland and France around its periphery. The title of the map is contained within a floral edged ribbon to the upper right arc of the oval with a rose compass below the Bristol Channel. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border with Ann Frances' name running across the lower arc.
The backing silk has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly stained in places with some minor undulation and general small, black speckles. There are some areas of minor thinning and two areas of damage to the lower section of the silk. The one below Glamorganshire revealing a small amount of backing hessian, the other is splits to the silk, but both appear stable. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original gilt frame which has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and several old losses around the edges. The frame also retains its original top hanging ring.
