Early 19th century needlework - c.1810. Worked in silk and chenille, this needlework is just delightful with fine quality paint and stitch work throughout. The cream coloured backing silk has a rolling expanse of grass dotted with flowers to the foreground with trees to the left and centre and an oversized stem of lemons to the right. There is a young goatherd playing a flute sitting on the grass as her young charge frolics nearby, mischievously tugging the hem of dress which also has the charming addition of a bow tied at the waist. A smartly dressed young man is standing beside the maiden and seems to be beckoning her to join him in his carriage which is being pulled by two delightfully quirky horses. The carriage has two coachmen waiting patiently for their master, the man in the foreground with a grey horse behind him, equally as quirky as his two equine friends.
The backing silk has minor undulation with some splits, all of which appear stable. There is also a loss to the silk in the lower right corner which reveals a backing cloth. This area also appears stable. The needlework is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the thread and paint appear good though they are likely to have mellowed over the years. The needlework is contained within an early/mid 19th century ebonised frame which is in good with age related rubbing to the paintwork and scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.

Measures 15" x 12 1/4" (sight size) and 18" x 15 1/4" including the frame.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
