A very rare Bohemian antique majolica oyster plate PANSY by Julius Dressler workshop, signed, circa 1890

Item description:

A truly rare and unusual antique Bohemian majolica oyster plate by Julius Dressler, signed and stamped.

Modeled as 6 celadon green shell shaped wells flower separated by deep green leaves and with a central well of a large pink pansy. Modeled and painted with high attention to details with stunning natural colors - tender pink, brown, white and green. This unique design of majolica oyster plate is featured on Majolica International Society website.

Doing some research on this plate we found out that being rare by itself, Julius Dressler's PANSY oyster plate have been seen couple of times on auctions in the version with the yellow center flower and never in this version - with pink pansy in the middle.

Plate is signed and stamped by Julius Dressler mark - an impressed tower on a bed of rock with the letters ‘JDB’ below where ‘B’ presumably stands for Biela, where the workshop was founded.

Condition:  Very good antique condition. Several tiny areas (from 0.5 to 1.5 mm) with glazing and paint wear off, both on the front of the plate and on the sides of the plate. Slight crazing to glaze. But no chips, cracks or repairs. Please see the photos for details.

Julius Dressler pottery history:

Julius Dressler was a noted Bohemian ceramics manufacturing company that operated from the late 19th century until the end of World War II.

Founded by Julius Dressler in the 1888 in Biela, part of (Tetschen-)Bodenbach in Northern Bohemia, the company produced high-quality decorative faience, maiolica, and porcelain ware. Dressler gained international renown for the ceramics it produced in the early 1900s in the Art Nouveau style.

Ca. 1920 the Dressler company became part of EPIAG, a consortium of independent companies established in 1918 to promote Bohemian ceramics.

The mark of Julius Dressler appears as an impressed tower on a bed of rock with the letters ‘JDB’ below. Presumably the ‘B’ is for Biela.

The Dressler company closed at the end of World War II, either in 1944 or 1945.
