Loaded with material expressly written for Nelson as well as tunes penned by Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and featuring an all-star session musician band, Ricky Sings Again is a foundation-building 1950s album.
Exceeding the fidelity of any prior analog pressing and affording a warmth missing from Capitol’s out-of-print digital reissues, this Silver Label LP — pressed at RTI and mastered on Mobile Fidelity’s internationally acclaimed mastering system — teems with detail, presence, dynamics, and authority. With help from his legendary father, Ozzie, Nelson enjoyed superb studio production, heard here in the form of balanced instrumentation, natural tonalities, wide and deep soundstages, and you-are-there vocals. Studio dimensions, too, come across with palpable body and precision. Since the record is a collection, some of the tracks are in mono, others in early stereo.
Backed by a stellar band that includes Elvis Presley guitarist James Burton and in-demand studio bassist James Kirkland, Nelson delivers what remains a 1950s classic that stands up to everything recorded by his famous contemporaries. Equally adept with rockabilly, plaintive ballads and drum-pounding rock, Roy Orbison stayed on the charts for thirty years from the very beginning of the rock era. His greatest legacy though, comes from his soaring, gut-wrenching musical melodramas. Other than Gene Pitney, only Roy Orbison was able to achieve this kind of incredible power and pathos flowing from his songs, examplified by "Only the Lonely", "In Dreams", "It's Over" and the incomparable "Crying". This early ALBUM release from Rhino brings together most of Orbison's biggest chart successes from his early years. With more than two dozen charted records to his credit, this can hardly be comprehensive but does offer a condensed cream-of-the-crop collection of hits plus some rare tracks. Orbison's vocals and the instrumental backrounds come through in startling clarity. The musical backround provided by way of the liner notes booklet follows the period of the recordings on the album. Not counting the 1976 "disco" version of Venus, recorded for the De-Lite label [# 46 that March], Frankie Avalon had 24 charted hit singles between 1958 and 1963 for Chancellor, including seven double-sided hits recorded by the former child prodigy trumpet player [Paul Whiteman's Teen Club TV show out of Philadelphia.
Under the sponsorship of Bob Marcucci and orchestra leader Peter DeAngelis, Avalon then opened the "Teen And Twenty Club" in Philadelphia where, among others, he was joined by Bobby Rydell and Fabian prior to their becoming established singing stars.
In 1957 Avalon became part of a group known as Rocco & His Saints and began recording for the new Chancellor label formed by Marcucci and DeAngelis, but without any national chart success. In that period he also made an appearance in the film Disc Jockey Jamboree along with Fats Domino, Slim Whitman, Jodie Sands, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Lewis Lymon & The Teen Chords, Buddy Knox, Count Basie, Joe Williams, and Sandy Singer.
Following several misses, he finally scored in 1958 with DeDe Dinah and crossed over to the R&B charts, he was off to the races. Additional film appearances would follow, including the John Wayne 1960 classic The Alamo [his buddy Fabian would also appear in a 1960 Wayne film, North To Alaska] and, of course, the series of beach movies with Annette.
