THE
ASSASSINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
ORIGINAL WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS NEWSPAPER OF APRIL 15, 1865!
Front
page view of this rare and highly collectible newspaper!
The front page had already been completed before news of the shooting
arrived.
Top
left of page one contains an article about the fall of the Confederacy
and the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox!
Pages
two and three where all the news about Lincoln is located in several
areas!
This
article is interesting in that it indicated that Secretary of State
William Seward
and his son were both murdered (they both actually
survived)! This is seen in
subsequent sections as the details and updates continued to arrive as
the type-
setting was being completed for this Saturday morning edition of the Daily Spy.
This
section first names "J. Wilkes Booth" as the probable assassin of
Lincoln
At
the bottom of the page, the terrible news that the nation's president
has succumbed
The back page (4) of the paper - note the interesting "Cherokee
Medicines"
checkerboard pattern design on the right-hand side and a few old
woodcuts

TITLE/DESCRIPTION:
ORIGINAL LINCOLN ASSASSINATION NEWSPAPER FROM WORCESTER, MASS. - APRIL 15, 1865!
CLASSIFICATION
OF ITEM: Genuine antique
newspaper
GRADE
OR CONDITION OF ITEM(S): Used - some folds, small tears, and
stains, but still generally solid condition
ADDITIONAL
DESCRIPTION: This
genuine antique
edition of the Worcester Daily
Spy dated Saturday
Morning, April 15, 1865 will be one of the highlights of any
important
collection of
historical newspapers! This totally awesome, four-page,
large
size paper originally cost four cents and the assassination of Abraham
Lincoln didn't even make the front
page! Why, you ask?
Well, back then, all the typesetting was done by hand and it was a very
slow and arduous process to put together even just four large pages of
print. Thus page one had
already been completed and page two just
begun when the awful news of Lincoln's assassination came across the
telegraph wires. You can actually read the first few
dispatches
as reported in the paper. This much-sought-after historical newspaper
is in fairly good shape for its age, with some folds, small tears, and
stains. It was part of a run of about two weeks worth of Daily Spy newspapers from this time
frame that we purchased some years ago (along with a large group of
old, large-sized foreign banknotes circa the early 1900's). Most
of the other newspapers were traded away for gold quite a while ago.
We still have a couple of other papers from the group. They are
in nice shape and the quality of the paper was actually better back
then than of today's newspapers (higher rag content); that's why these
old timers were able to survive. Needless to say, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for the Abe Lincoln or Civil War buff!
Are there any other
copies of this particular newspaper even in existence? We
have seen some New York papers from this date (some were
reproductions). We hope you enjoyed the scans above and think
you'll appreciate the history represented by this old-time piece of
newsprint. Some of the scans are a different shade because they
were taken at different times in different lighting conditions and with
two different cameras. Enjoy and please check out our many other
interesting items!
