Five different issues of The Californian Magazine. The Californian was a San Francisco literary periodical issued monthly during 1880–1882, published by Anton Roman who had helped found the earlier (and later) Overland Monthly. The Californian was a continuation of the Overland Monthly after its 1875 cessation, and changed back into the Overland Monthly in late 1882. The Californian was thoroughly Western in character, local to this coast in its flavor, representative and vigorous in its style and method of dealing with questions, and edited for popular rather than for a severely literary constituency. Included are October 1880, February 1881, August 1881, May 1881 and June 1882. Some of the stories include: Southern california under the friars, 12 days on a mexican highway, The two redwoods, Studies of california Missions, Ethics of Transatlantic Steamers, A day on Guano island, Taxation in California, A study of Walt Whitman, John G Whittier, Our roadbuilders and the state, Battle of Wabash and more.  .Appx. 7' x 10" and about 100 pgs. Tweo issues have illustrations. No photographs, and a few pages of ads. a very clean copy. This is a rare find of a magazine of this quality from this era.  I prefer to sell these as a lot only.
