Night in the Ruts is the sixth album by American rock band Aerosmith, released on November 1, 1979, by Columbia Records. Joe Perry left the band midway through its recording. The album was initially produced at the Bands Warehouse/Rehearsal space by Jack Douglas who had produced Aerosmith's previous four albums, but later, Columbia Records brought in Gary Lyons to replace Douglas as the producer.

Recording of Night in the Ruts began in the spring of 1979, but when it was only halfway finished, the record label and management ordered the band to go out on tour in order to generate some revenue, as they had quickly burned through the budget allotted to them. This premature tour during the summer months pushed the album's release to late in the year. Even worse, substance abuse among the band members was getting worse and they started fighting among themselves. This led to a number of missed and sloppy live performances, finally culminating in a violent fight involving the band members and their wives. Joe Perry quit the band halfway through the tour. Prior to his departure, Perry had completed guitar parts for "No Surprize," "Chiquita," "Cheese Cake," "Three Mile Smile," and "Bone to Bone (Coney Island White Fish Boy)." The guitar parts for the remaining songs were recorded by Brad Whitford, Richie Supa, Neil Thompson, and Jimmy Crespo (who later became Perry's official replacement from 1979-84).

"Bone to Bone (Coney Island White Fish Boy)" is the most performed song from Night In The Ruts, with 144 performances. It received heavy rotation in the band's live setlist during the second half of the 1980s, but had largely been dropped by 1990. Also included on the album was a cover of "Think About It," a Yardbirds B-side from 1968 that Aerosmith had occasionally played live through the 70s and decided now to produce a recorded version.

Stylistically, Night in the Ruts marked an attempt to return to the straight hard rock sound of Toys In The Attic and Rocks after their previous album, Draw The Line took a slight divergence by adding keyboards and female backing vocals. The album is considered to mark a transition between the raw sound of Aerosmith's early years to the more polished, radio-friendly feel they would adopt in the following decade.

WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI-LP-SLEEVE" CD?

Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.

Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.

Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.

Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded.

All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece.

Album Notes
Digitally remastered Japanese limited edition in an LP-style slipcase. Remastered by Don DeVito & Vic Anesini.

NIGHT IN THE RUTS has been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process. This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos and artwork. At the time NIGHT IN THE RUTS was recorded, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry quit the band in 1979, citing personality conflicts with his long-time songwriting partner Steven Tyler.Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, keyboards); Jim Crespo, Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums).Additional personnel: Neil Thompson, Richard Supa (guitar); George Young (alto saxophone); Lou Marini (tenor saxophone); Lou Delgotto (baritone saxophone); Barry Rogers (trombone).Japanese edition features mini LP-style packaging.Although 1979's NIGHT IN THE RUTS has a black and white album cover with all five members dressed as miners, in reality, Joe Perry left the band in the middle of recording due to personal differences. Brooklyn-born Jimmy Crespo was recruited to play on the remainder of RUTS and fill in Perry's shoes on tour. Throughout all the chaos, Perry managed to have his explosive guitar playing rise to the task. His interplay with Brad Whitford and an aggressive horn section make "Chiquita" one of the hardest rocking songs on this album. Elsewhere, Perry's skill on six-string found him playing the kind of slide guitar on "Cheesecake" that would make Duanne Allman jealous. The slide also came in handy during the slow blues of the novelty cover "Reefer Head Woman."Steven Tyler's lyrics also seemed unaffected by all the turmoil as he wrote songs touching on a variety of topics. "No Surprize" immortalizes Aerosmith's early days, "Mia" is a tribute to Tyler's newborn daughter, and "Three Mile Smile" is a song that captures the "no nukes" fervor of the time
