Japanese OBI MINI REPLICA  WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI-LP-SLEEVE" CD?

Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.

Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.

Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.

Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded.

All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece.

THE PRETTY THINGS is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files including a promotional video of "Rosalyn."The Pretty Things: Phil May (vocals); Dick Taylor, Brian Pendleton (guitar); John Stax (bass); Viv Prince (drums).Includes liner notes by Paul Du Noyer. All tracks digitally remastered from the original master tapes by Mark St. John and Andy Pearce (February 1998, Masterpiece Mastering, London, England).Japanese edition.CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve.Raucous to the point of making their peers the Rolling Stones look tame, the Pretty Things took the emerging British blues-rock sound of the mid-1960s and injected it with a heavy dose of manic energy. Given guitarist Dick Taylor's initial musical camaraderie with classmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Taylor was in the Stones briefly before bowing out to attend art school), it's no surprise that the lesser-known group had much in common with the soon-to-be superstars. The Pretty Things' self-titled 1965 debut is a restless set of tunes largely made up of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry covers, with the quartet surging through a feisty take on Diddley's "Roadrunner" and a breakneck-paced rendition of Berry's "Oh Baby Doll," among others. Phil May, the group's hyperactive vocalist, makes Mick seem positively polite, while the rest of the band has clearly borrowed pages from the Keith Moon book of freewheeling musicianship. The resulting album may be too raw for some listeners, but for ardent fans of early Stones, Animals, and Kinks, THE PRETTY THINGS will be a welcome discovery

Album Notes
GET THE PICTURE is an enhanced CD.The Japanese special-edition release features a vinyl-inspired design.CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve.Released at the end of 1965, the Pretty Things' second album, GET THE PICTURE, proved to be a much more dynamic release than their debut. Although a number of tracks still sound distinctly like contemporaneous Rolling Stones songs, the notoriously wild British band was intent on expanding its sound here, with vocalist Phil May and guitarist Dick Taylor (an original Stone, in fact) penning a number of originals, rather than relying largely on old blues covers. "Buzz The Jerk" rides along on clanging percussion and razor-wire guitar lines, while the slinky title track brings to mind Donovan fronting the Kinks. Other highlights include the upbeat folk of "London Town" and the stinging sass of "Gonna Find Me A Substitute." In addition to the original album, this disc also presents a number of bonus tracks, most notably the energetic, Animals-esque single "Midnight To Six Man." The document of an ensemble quickly maturing musically (if not in the public eye), GET THE PICTURE is an underrated gem of mid-'60s British rock, and easily one of the Pretty Things' best records.

CROSS TALK -

Usually when I have a new CD, I play it once or twice and the put it aside for a while. This one though has been played at least ten times since I got it less than two days ago. Though recorded in 1980, the record sounds as fresh as if issued just recently. This is driving, melodic rock, with chord changes reminiscent of Elvis Costello - understandably, considering the period it was recorded, yet there's absolutely nothing outdated about this record. "Crosstalk" confirms that the Pretty Things are one underrated outfit if ever there was one. There may be better musicians around, but for sheer spirit and conviction these guys are hard to beat. And this is what rock is all about, isn't it. "Crosstalk" is as brilliant as the recent "Rage Before Beauty", another overlooked gem of a record, and anybody who owns these two will just certainly dig deeper into the Pretties' catalogue. I can't wait to hear what these rebellious men in their fifties come up with next. It will put most of today's self-professed "rock" musicians to shame.
