Product Description:

This offering is for one set of new-old-stock Shimano Sante index (or SIS) capable shifters (Model SL-5000 in the clamp-on model). These shifters incorporate Shimano's second generation index shifting technology (introduced in 1989), which appears to improve upon Shimano's earlier design by adding the 7-speed index shifting option. They are not as nice as Shimano's top-end Dura-Ace down tube shifters from this period, but still a very good quality down tube shifter set (and extremely rare in new-old-stock condition). Some of the detailed specs include...

  • Index shifting compatibility: 7-speed (with Shimano branded or compatible freewheel/cassette)

  • Friction shifting compatibility: Several options (most 5/6/7 speed freewheels/cassettes)

  • Mounting bracket/spacers: Clamp-on model (to the down tube...also...see discussion below if conversion to braze-on model w/appropriate spacers is desired)

  • Weight: 140 grams (including mounting hardware and cables...just as pictured)

  • Other notes: The left-side shifter is designed for friction-mode only, so it should be compatible with most double/triple cranksets.

It's probably also worth noting the extremely short production run for the Sante groupset.  The best I can tell the groupset was introduced in the late 80's, but appears to have been discontinued by 1990 (so a 1-2 year production run is all that we appear to have with this groupset).  This limited production run is consistent with what we see on the market today...and that is very little in the way of new-old-stock Sante components (at least relative to some of Shimano's other high-end road components from this same era).

The few sets we have are retail boxed and show quite well...and this includes the white enamel finish on the alloy levers, which has been well preserved. Also, each set includes the full complement of shifter cables and mounting hardware...although please refer to the note below for more specific details concerning the mounting hardware.  Lastly, I can confirm this set includes the two light gray (rubber) dust covers that seat over the cable-head mounting holes.  This latter accessory is more cosmetic in nature, as they clean-up the overall lever appearance, but we thought the accessory was still worth mentioning (as we do not always find them to be included with these sets).

Down tube spacer discussion...
If you look closely at the pictures to the left, and particularly those that show a close-up of the mounting hardware, you will notice this offering includes factory matched Shimano clamp-on hardware with M5 (so 5 mm) bolts.  This clamp-on hardware by itself is a difficult find for us, so the fact that it's included with a rare shifter set would appear to make this a fairly unique offering.  Having said this, should some one prefer exchanging this clamp-on hardware for braze-on hardware, then we have a few extra spacer sets that will allow for us to accommodate this request.  In the case of braze-on hardware, please keep in mind there are two types of braze-on spacers...those that are curved and those that are flat...and both are compatible with different frame down tubes.  We discuss these two braze-on spacer options in much more detail in other listings and I'd be happy to answer any questions or point you to some of those other listings for a more complete discussion.

Note to international customers regarding shipping...
We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case.

Note to international customers regarding customs...
We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
