Dorothy Davenport was an American actress, screenwriter, film director and producer
who appeared in silent films for Biograph Studios under the direction of D.W. Griffith.
She and silent film actor Wallace Reid married in 1913 and worked on many films together
during his short career. While on location in Oregon filming The Valley of the Giants (1919)
he was injured in a train wreck and was prescribed morphine for his pain. He became
addicted; at age 31 he died in Davenport's arms in a sanitarium. After his death she and
Thomas Ince co-produced Human Wreckage (1923), a film that dealt with the dangers of
narcotics addiction starring Bessie Love. Later in life she dabbled as a producer and a writer.
