The top "shirt" part of the costume opens in the back with velcro and also has a strap around the neck that opens with velcro.
The "tail" part of the costume is made to be figure fitting on the doll (just like a real mermaid), therefore it is snug and a little more difficult to get on. It's best to "inch" the tail on. Younger children may need help with putting it on.
The tail opens a small amount at the bottom, so that the doll can stand up. I moved the fabric away in the last pic so that you can see how it opens.
The American girl doll is Not included.

~ Note: Soft bodied dolls should not really be put in water. The mermaid costume is for pretending to be around water. The costume will not protect the doll if it's put in water.
