Fabulous rare Wedgwood majolica sardine box "crate in ocean" from the "argenta" series, highly decorated as it sounds with a square crate with pink rope tied around it, surrounded by swirling waves and shells and seaweed. Shades of cream, cream, brown, pink and yellow. Turquoise ground inside. Impressed Wedgwood mark, and registration mark for 1879.

It measures 8 1/4" long and 7 3/8" wide and 3 1/2" high. Condition is very good with just a few minor points to note: there is a hairline to the 'skirt' either side of the box section and some crazing and discolouration in the base of the box. A very small piece of good restoration to one corner of the box. Surface wear is very good, just a bit of glaze wear to the corners and edge of the 'skirt' and tips of the rope raised at the rim of the box.
