A 6 1/4" tall beautiful DEEP COBALT BLUE COLORED square-shaped antique effervescent salt bottle, a scarce to rare bottle that does not come up for sale too often. Note that this bottle is embossed with the world infamous, one and only true 'GRANDPAPPY' owl on it, a LARGE embossed COMICAL looking bird on it. The bird somewhat resembles an old man, a grand father or GRANDPAPPY! This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating back to the early 1900's.
Note that this bottle has the rarely seen 'Grandpappy' owl embossed on this bottle. The term Grandpappy was first used by the authors in their book on "Old Owl Drug Bottles and Others". They refer to it as a Grandpappy as it looks like a an old man, a 'grandpappy'. The author's even described him as a 'hairy looking' beatnik, and a real non-conformist. Non-conformist? All of the Grandpappy owls are '2 winged owls', that is, evenly centered embossed birds displaying equal portions of both wings = 2 wings, a '2 winged owl' as it were. Not that this is rare in itself but what makes this a RARE feature and a non-conformist is that 99.9% of ALL embossed 2 winged owls appear on later machine made bottles. In this instance, this bottle is an earlier and cruder hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM). So it is a non conformist that breaks all the rules with his appearance. The Grandpappy owl appears on about 4 tooled top bottles and a dose glass: 1) A 9 1/2" tall cobalt blue square salts bottle. 2) this 6 1/4" tall cobalt blue square salts bottle. Then he also appears on 3) a 5" cobalt blue triangular shaped Poison bottle and number 4), a 4 1/2" tall clear rectangular bottle. The embossed Grandpappy owl bottles are among the most desirable of all Owl Drug bottles. It has been suggested that they are a prototype or transitional bottle from when the drug company was switching from the older 1 wing birds to the newer 2 wing birds, but no one really knows for sure. In conclusion, the Grandpappy owl bottles are such excellent bottles that the very first edition of the book on Owl drug bottles has this exact bottle gracing the front cover of the book because it is such a great looking bottle, check it out!
