As part of the numerous compilations issued in conjunction with the major television documentary series The Blues, this is a collection of blues-oriented Hendrix recordings. There is a previous compilation of Hendrix's blues-oriented work in 1994, simply titled Blues. There is little repetition between Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues and Blues, though, and it works as a decent grouping of some of his bluesiest recordings for those listeners who want to plunge especially deeply into one facet of his repertoire.
"Red House" and "Voodoo Chile" are by far the most celebrated tracks here. The fine Earl King cover "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" (from Electric Ladyland) is the only other song that came out in Hendrix's lifetime The other selections vary from inspired ("Hear My Train a Comin'," recorded in early 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience lineup, and a solo "Midnight Lightning") to straight ahead jams, with Hendrix's imaginative virtuosity and affinity for the blues evident.
This being a posthumous Hendrix release, it couldn't be complete without a couple of previously unissued tracks to tempt the completists, Those are the 1969 outtakes "Georgia Blues," on which Hendrix is actually more like a backing musician for Lonnie Youngblood (who takes lead vocals), and "Blue Window," a nearly 13-minute outing that gives vent to his jazzier tendencies, the arrangement also featuring organ, three saxophones, and two trumpets.

January of 1968 brought Axis: Bold As Love, an album that
expanded Jimi's six-string flame with celestial clarity and also brought his
rapidly evolving songwriting gift to the fore. It was recorded at Olympic
Studios in London.
After the U.S. release of Are You Experienced and American
tour dates that left jaws dropped, anticipation was very high about the next
Jimi Hendrix album. Many fans and critics consider this follow up, Axis: Bold
As Love, his best collective effort. Released in November of 1968, it
immediately garnered high praise for it’s incredible performances and
innovative engineering by Eddie Kramer. The album was to spawn many hits
including "Up From The Skies," "If 6 was 9," "Spanish
Castle Magic," "Little Wing," and "Castles Made of Sand,"
among others. Again joined by Noel Redding’s bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums.
This Track Edition is exclusively presented here by Classic, pressed on 180
gram vinyl and mastered directly from the original MONO master tapes. Original
1968 mono copies of this title on Reprise, bring as much as a staggering $1400

Noel Redding: The Experience Sessions presents a collection
of rare and previously unreleased studio recordings made by Redding during his
two-and three quarter year tenure with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and also
contains the master takes of his two stand-out original compositions, Electric
Ladyland Little Miss Strange and Axis: Bold As Love She's So Fine. Previously
unreleased alternate recordings of these two essential tracks are included,
offering fascinating insight into the inner-workings of the group in the
studio.
This disc is also a cause for celebration simply for the
fact that three of the tracks, the previously unissued "There Ain't
Nothing Wrong" and "Noel's Tune (Take 1)" plus an out-of-print
live rendition of "Red House," feature blistering guitar work from
Jimi Hendrix. The basic rhythm track of the album opener, "There Ain't
Nothing Wrong," was recorded December 28, 1967 by Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell,
and Traffic guitarist Dave Mason during the Electric Ladyland sessions, and it
is a thrill to hear previously unearthed examples of Jimi's genius during this
highly creative period for himself and the band. This recording is particularly
unique in that Noel, under the direction of former Jimi Hendrix Experience
producer Chas Chandler in 1989, composed lyrics, recorded a lead vocal, and
added new bass parts to this previously unissued Jimi Hendrix session.
"Noel's Tune (Take 1)" recorded days after the
Experience's historic February 24, 1969 performance at London's Royal Albert
Hall, is a rave-up rocker featuring Noel pounding away on funky rhythm guitar
while Jimi adds appropriately intense guitar work. "Red House,"
recorded live at the Olympia Theater in Paris on January 29, 1968, is a rare
example of Noel recreating the studio take by forgoing the use of the bass in
favor of bass-heavy rhythm guitar; Jimi's playing on this high-energy track is
simply spectacular. It was in the aftermath of the release of Axis: Bold As
Love that Noel began to develop new solo material in earnest. Noel Redding: The
Experience Sessions presents the much sought-after unreleased tracks
"Dream" and "Walking Through the Garden," both of which
feature Noel on guitar and Jimi on bass, plus a previously unissued demo of
"How Can I Live?." Noel would later re-record the song without
Hendrix and include the new version as part of his first post-Experience
release, Fat Mattress. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, under the
supervision of Eddie Kramer, by George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York and
released in cooperation with Experience Hendrix by Classic on our proprietary

As Christmas 1969 beckoned, Jimi Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox, and drummer Buddy Miles engaged in extensive rehearsals for their highly anticipated appearances at the Filmore East in New York.
Branded by Hendrix as the "Band of Gypsys", the trio worked feverishly rounding such exciting new original material as "Izabella" and "Machine Gun" infot form. Keenly aware of the special significance his forthcoming concerts represented, Jimi wanted to prepare something extraordinary for his audience. To mark the occasion in his own inimitable fashion, Jimi readied this special medley of holiday favorites to celebrate both Christmas and the drawing of a new decade.
This recording was made at Baggy's Studios, a Manhattan rehearsal facility the group preferred. It by no means should be considered a polished studio recording made to Hendrix's exacting specifications. It is, instead, perhaps even more revealing. This is a glimpse of Jimi simply having fun in the company of close friends. As an added bonus, also included is Jimi's playful "Three Little Bears". This track was recorded with the Experience at the Record Plant in May 1968 during sessions for Electric Ladyland. Bypassed for that album, "Three Little Bears" was originally issued as part of the 1972 posthumous complication War Heroes.
The photograph of Jimi posing as Santa Claus was originally organized on behalf of the UK music newspaper Record Mirror to help publicize the release of Axis: Bold As Love in December of 1967.
