High Impact Polystyrene, commonly referred to as HIPS, is a cost effective and lightweight sheet plastic which is ideally suited to thermoforming and printing applications. Benefitting from up to seven times greater impact strength than general purpose polystyrene, it is a low cost yet high performance plastic which excels in a variety of applications.

Key Features:

  • Lightweight
  • Suitable for thermoforming
  • Suitable for painting and printing
  • Very cost effective
  • Impact resistant
  • Easy to fabricate
  • Suitable for gluing

Combining excellent forming qualities, good colouration and mechanical properties, HIPS is frequently used to manufacture of product prototypes. This is due largely to its low cost but is also thanks to the ease at which it can be fabricated, painted and glued; along with the fantastic dimensional stability of the finished item.

The ability to be thermoformed makes HIPS a very versatile cut plastic material, and it is also a popular choice of material for creating a variety of storage and low strength transport containers. White HIPS is Food and Drug Administration approved and is therefore safe for use in food preparation environments and also with taste or odour sensitive products thanks to its low residual volatility.

Other properties of HIPS which broaden the range of applications it is suitable for include its ability to accommodate paint and printing. This makes it a great material for a number of indoor point of sale, display and signage applications where it results in a terrifically lightweight and attractive finished product.

The versatility of HIPS makes it a fantastically popular choice of material for a number of applications where an easy to handle, easy to thermoform, dimensionally stable and printer friendly sheet plastic is required.
