Here on offer is a collectable
group of tokens for Williams Bros Direct Supply Stores Ltd.
Two young
brothers, John and Alfred Williams, from Sheerness, Kent in 1872, founded their
their first small shop in Caledonian Road, Islington. The Times 16/11/1963
reported that Williams Brothers Direct Supply Stores Ltd had 150 grocery,
butchers & hardware shops in the Home Counties and North London. Since
1910, the customer or member received metal tokens to the value of purchases
which were redeemed at 5 per cent of the face value, there were many varieties
of the tinned iron tokens in circle, oval or square designs. The tokens were replaced
by actual stamps in 1963.The maker was Charles Wright Ltd., from Clerkenwell
London, famous for making Crimean war medals. Due to complaints about the
noise, they moved to Thorn Bank, Edgware in 1900.
This is a good little collection of tokens with
various values.
A wonderful and highly collectable token.
