Up for your consideration is a very fine watercolor/gouache by the noted Chicago artist Miles W. Sater (American, 1883 - 1953).  The piece was painted in the early 1940s based on the several modes of public transportation that are depicted throughout.  The Chicago "L" train is above Lake street, and virtually all of the old buildings in this historic record have been replaced with newer ones.  The actual location depicted is at the point where the North & South branches of the Chicago river meet, and the perspective is from Wolf point (near the Merchandise Mart).  Currently, you would see the curved green 300 Wacker drive building.  The piece was painted to accurately depict the scene at the time. Miles Sater was known for his postcards and etchings of the Chicago downtown.

The piece is large, and has been expertly framed.  It is signed lower right, and the approximate image size by sight 17 1/2" x 34", with the outer dimension of the frame measuring 30" x 46".

An examination of the piece shows "cutaway" portions that reveal the Amtrak lines from Northwestern station, a hypothetical tunnel system with underground "L" trains.  There are also period trains, buses, taxis, and cars, so clearly the focus of this work is the Chicago public transportation system.

The painting is in excellent condition, free of rips, tears, or damage to the artwork.  There is one area of foxing that consists of 4 small brown dots, see last photo.  These are minor, and do not distract.  The painting may appear to be faded in the photos, but the colors are much more vivid in person, and have not faded since the artwork was completed.  The frame is also in excellent condition, showing light wear.  It was custom framed using UV resistant plexiglass.
