The history of the railways in the Netherlands began on September 20, 1839, with the opening of the Amsterdam - Haarlem railway.
After the opening of the first railways in the United Kingdom and Belgium, plans were also made for railways in the Netherlands. In 1831 the plan for opening the first lines was discussed for the first time, which was to provide the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam with a fast connection to Germany. Ultimately, the first railway line in 1839 would not run to Germany, but from Amsterdam to Haarlem.
