Traditionally during the Whitsun weekend, the Brotherhood of Niel goes on foot to Scherpenheuvel. It is not really known how it all started, but according to various sources "the Brotherhood of O.L.V. of Scherpenheuvel - Niel" was founded in 1815. Old writings tell us that the plague had broken out in the Rupel region, and that is why various pilgrims went to seek protection at Onze Lieve Vrouw van Scherpenheuvel.
