Historia Augusta, 1. Hadrian, V

Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76-138 AD) was the Roman emperor who ruled for over for more than 20 years over an empire spanning three continents, from the Scottish border to the Sahara, and from the Atlantic to the Euphrates. He focused on peace and prosperity, and Hadrian is known for investing in the arts and architecture throughout his empire. The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Hadrian Limited Edition 76 is dedicated to this important peacekeeping Roman Emperor and patron of the arts.

·       The extravagant décor of Villa Adriana served as inspiration for the hand-engraved Au 750 solid white gold cap, which features the mosaic pattern from the floor of the Hospitalia.

·       The winding circular decoration of the cone and cap ring represents Janus, the Roman god of all beginnings and endings.

·       The Au 750 white gold cap ring is adorned with two artfully worked medallions: one is inspired by a Medusa embellishment on one of the best-known busts of Hadrian, the other one by Antinous’s portrait as the Egyptian god Osiris.

·       The shape of the Au 750 solid white gold cap top and cone recalls with its gradations the dome of the Roman Pantheon. In place of the round oculus of the dome, the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl decorates the centre of the cap top.

·       In reference to the Eleusinian Mysteries, the clip is artfully designed in the shape of a ripe wheat sheaf, the main attribute of the goddess Demeter.

·       The barrel created of matte Egyptian basalt, features an handcrafted peacock. It is belived that thsese magnificent birds, regarded as symbols of immortality, were once part of the original decoration of Hadrian’s mausoleum.

·       The handcrafted Au 750 gold nib is decorated with the Hadrianic phoenix.

·       The number of pieces in this PoA Hadrian Artisan LE76 edition is a reference to the year of Hadrian’s birth.

The concerned pen has never been used nor inked. It comes in mint condition together with all original packaging, boxes and papers (duly stamped).
