The Drifters had many group member changes over the years including lead singers for Atlantic Records, the Bell Records
Long time manager George Treadwell kept hiring and firing
personnel at will.
Ex Dominoes singer Clyde McPhatter was one of the best of
these leads
He kept the group in the charts in the early days, then left
for a solo career going on to Mercury and MGM.
In the 70s nearly broke he approached Atlantic once again to
revive his fortunes. The label declined to re-sign him.
Many of these great leads for The Drifters are gone now.
