JUMBO BioBalls Biological Filter Media have an extremely high surface area for bacteria to colonize. The trickle effect increases dissolved oxygen levels in the aquarium and cleans or filters the water as the Bioballs combine with organic waste to dissolve it. 

A far better option for bio-media than lava rock and much lighter. Bioballs are used by hatcheries, tropical fish farms, koi ponds, waste water systems, cooling towers, and other commercial & industrial systems.
