INDEX311

Life was cheap and often brief on the frontiers of the Old West. From 1870, when the first robbery occurred on the Central Pacific Railroad, down to 1933 when a lone bandit held up the Sunset Limited and got shot for his pains, millions of dollars in gold, silver, currency, and valuables were rifled from mail cars by desperadoes. In fact train robbery at one time became almost a regional sport.
In spite of the anxious efforts of the railroads, the police, and the gun-toting public, these attacks were often successful. Many trainmen and passengers lost their lives when robbers blasted the mail cars, or perished in the ensuing fracas. Exciting chases and sensational trials usually followed.
Mr. Block surveys this fascinating segment of Americana in detail. His book is far more than a mere collection of case histories, for he shows how the art of train robbery developed, and why. He tells the story of the leading practitioners-such men as the Dalton Gang, the Wild Bunch, "Big Nose" George Parrott, Al Jennings, and the highly successful D'Autremont brothers, one of whom has just been released from jail. These were great names in the West and their exploits still ring in the memory.
A true amateur of crime, the author brings to life some twenty of the most famous train robberies of all time. Each one will be of interest to any reader who likes a good rousing story of real life adventure, with plenty of gunplay and Fate (in the shape of the railroad police and the sheriff) usually catching up with the villain.
