Songs Recorded During Legendary 1997 Fillmore Residency on
3LP!
33 Songs of Hits, Deep Cuts & Classic Covers - Over 2
Hours of Music!
"We all feel this might be the highpoint of our time
together as a group" - Tom Petty
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers famously played 20 nights
at the legendary Fillmore venue in San Francisco in 1997. Six of the shows were
professionally recorded and this release features some of the high points of
the residency. The small venue allowed the band to vary their sets each night;
they included re-arranged and distinctive versions of their hits, deep cuts,
and many cover versions - paying tribute to the artists that Tom and the band
had been influenced by.
"I'm really proud of it," guitarist Mike Campbell
told Ultimate Classic Rock in 2022. "It was one of the greatest parts of
our career. We changed the songs every night and took some liberties with some
of the arrangements here and there. I'm really glad we got that on tape. Of
course, we had some guest artists like John Lee Hooker, Roger McGuinn, Bo
Diddley... It's a really good illustration of the Heartbreakers just being
spontaneous and in the moment without being too rehearsed."
"We played everything that came across our minds,"
Petty said in Paul Zollo's 2005 book Conversations with Tom Petty. "One
night we played for four hours - which really isn't like the Heartbreakers. But
we just got into a groove, and it went fine. The encore was an hour and a half.
And it was great, because it was intimate. ... And you can do things in a
smaller theater that you can't do in a coliseum, so it's kind of
liberating."
"When Tom said, 'We're going to do all these concerts
and do a bunch of different stuff,' I was like, 'We can't do that. That's
chewing off way too much," keyboardist Benmont Tench told Rolling Stone in
2021. "But it wasn't chewing off way too much. It was the best thing we
could have done. It refreshed the band as much as touring with Bob [Dylan] did
in 1986 and 1987, and as much as doing Full Moon Fever refreshed Tom. It was
really great."
The Fillmore dates "may be the best time we've ever had
musically," Petty told BAM magazine in 1997. "We're all getting along
real well, everyone's happy. It's maybe the best time of our lives
really."
The 3LP set includes 33 tracks, 18 of which are covers, and
2 hours of music. The tri-fold sleeve includes a 4-page insert.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers set new standards during a
20-date residency held in January and February 1997 at the Fillmore in San
Francisco. The epic, nearly month-long run of performances included
tried-and-true hits, various guest appearances and countless cover songs, some
of which Petty had never previously played live and would never again. The
goal, in essence, was to let loose and enjoy the ride.
-Allison Rapp, Ultimate Classic Rock
How and why this high energy, guitar-driven stuff sat in the
can for all of these years is a mystery (though tracks probably did appear on
some CD compilations). It's so great, especially in these dwindling rock days.
The level of musicianship is as high as you'll hear on a live set and Ulyate
confirmed there were no post production overdubs. You are hearing the live
playing. If you like the sound of electric guitars you'll love the overall
sound, the stereo spread, the depth and dimensionality too. There are no notes
about the sound source recorded by Biff Daves and Westwood One on the set
produced by Petty's long time engineer Ryan Ulyate and Mike Campbell but Ryan
Ulyate confirms the recording started life as 2" 24 track analog tape,
15IPS, Dolby SR, that was transferred to 96/24 ProTools and mixed 'in the box'.
Ulyate's mixes are spacious, three-dimensional and models of clarity and
timbral jingle-jangle. Vocals are well-recorded and presented. The sound will
not disappoint you: it's full color, three-dimensional and pristine. The
analog-y nature of the source material shines through. Crank it up and enjoy
the almost carefree, fun-filled era that's further and further away in the rear
view mirror. You can almost choose your seat by setting the volume.

Pure Sonic Joy!
During Tom Petty's final interview with the Los Angeles
Times, as the triumphant 40th anniversary tour with The Heartbreakers was
coming to an end, he announced that his next big focus would be to finally
revisit his 1994 masterpiece, Wildflowers, co-produced with Rick Rubin and Mike
Campbell.
Wildflowers in many ways changed Tom's creative life - as a
recording artist, collaborator and band leader - while a profound, personal
crisis transformed the stories and emotional thrust in his songs. Tom
ultimately wrote more songs than he could release at the time. In fact, Tom,
Rubin and Campbell completed the album as a double CD with 25 songs, nearly two
hours of music, but his label advised restraint. Released on November 1, 1994,
Wildflowers - a single CD with 15 songs, still more than an hour in length -
was Tom's most acutely confessional album to date.
The resurrection of Wildflowers has been a long time coming.
In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone Tom detailed his plans for the reissue,
telling the magazine, "I broke through to something else. My personal life
came crashing down, and it derailed me for a while. But I was at the top of my
game during that record." Then again in 2016 on SiriusXM's Tom Petty
Radio, he discussed his desire for a Wildflowers tour to coincide with a
reissue. Tom had always intended to release the second half of the album - a
collection he named All The Rest, featuring ten songs from the Wildflowers
recording sessions that were left off the original version and five unreleased
tracks (different versions of four other songs would appear on the soundtrack
to the 1996 film, She's The One).
Wildflowers & All The Rest, the long-awaited Wildflowers
reissue and comprehensive collection, will be released on October 16, 2020 via
Warner Records. Tom's vision of the project is becoming a reality due to the
commitment of his loving family, bandmates and collaborators who helped unearth
many previously unheard gems. The compilation was curated by Tom's daughters,
Adria and Annakim Petty and his wife Dana Petty who call it, "Many, many
hours of pure sonic joy," as well as Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and
Benmont Tench, and was produced by Tom's longtime engineer and co-producer Ryan
Ulyate. Together they stewarded the warmth Tom created through his music and
relationship to his fans.
Adria Petty also oversaw the creative direction for the
Wildflowers project, with original packaging illustrations by Blaze Ben Brooks,
original cover beadwork by Maria Sarno, as well as Wildflowers-era photography
by Mark Seliger, Robert Sebree and Martyn Atkins.
The 7 LP 140g deluxe edition of Wildflowers contains 54
tracks, 7 unreleased songs, and 25 unreleased alternate versions. In addition
to the 15 track original album (remastered on two LPs), the deluxe edition
contains the album All The Rest (10 songs from the original Wildflowers
sessions), a double LP of 15 solo demos recorded by Petty at his home studio,
and an additional double LP of 14 live versions of Wildflowers songs recorded
from 1995 - 2017. The deluxe packaging includes a 60-page book, an introduction
by Rick Rubin (the original producer), an essay by David Fricke, a complete
track-by-track, and rare photos and specially commissioned illustrations.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the eponymous debut album
by the band of the same name, released on November 9, 1976 by Shelter Records.
After nearly a year and many positive reviews, the album reached the U.S.
charts, where it climbed to #55 in 1978 and eventually went Gold. The single
"Breakdown" cracked the Top 40 in the U.S. and "American
Girl" became an FM radio staple that can still be heard today.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers released their debut album
in 1976. Since that time they have sold more than 50 million records and earned
a reputation as being among the most successful and exciting touring acts in
the business.
Between the Heartbreakers' recordings and his solo work, Tom
Petty has received 18 Grammy nominations. Honored with lifetime achievement
awards including Billboard's Century Award, MTV's Video Vanguard Award, and
induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tom Petty, with the
Heartbreakers at his side, has achieved the status of legend among his fellow
musicians and listeners worldwide.
"...the highlights -- "Rockin' Around (With
You)," "Hometown Blues," "The Wild One, Forever," the
AOR staples "Breakdown" and "American Girl" -- still
illustrate how refreshing Petty & the Heartbreakers sounded in 1976."

This didn't produce as many hits as many of his other albums, but I thought it was nearly as good, although it's more experimental in places. The most famous song is "Don't Come Around Here No More" with its sitars creating a slightly psychedellic angry rocker with a slow beat, that changes to a fast, harder one at the end.
Also, who could forget that weird Alice In Wonderland takeoff video? The more typical, Lynyrd Skynyrd styled, fun southern rocker "Rebels" was a hit that should've been bigger. "Make It Better (Forget About Me)" was an almost New Wave kind of fast, jumpy catchy song that also was a minor hit. The other songs are pretty good too, even if they're not what you'd expect from Tom.
The catchy, mid-tempo pop/rocker "Dogs On The Run" is another song that could've been on one of his earlier albums. Also there's a couple really good ballads here. The soft, emotional title track talks about southern life, and mention's Tom's mother, who died shortly before this album was made "Full Moon Fever" and everything afterwards has more of a middle-aged, less rocking, modern day Bob Dylan sound.
This is right in the middle of those periods. Southern Accents is strangely one of Petty`s best records, but with the least amount of hits coming out. "Southern Accents" is probably one of the most beautiful songs Tom Petty ever has made. It is a lonely and moody piano, expressing the purest thing in the musical world, just a man and his closest friend, his instrument. All the songs on the album has their own style, none are alike, and this makes "Southern Accents" Tom Petty`s most varied album ever. And one of his strongest.

The follow-up to 2010's Mojo is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' 13th studio album which was co-produced by Petty, Mike Campbell, and Ryan Ulyate. Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine about the album, Petty responded to comments that the release sounds like his earlier albums 'Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' from 1976 and 'You're Gonna Get It' from 1978.
"That's what Mike said: 'You sing like you did on the first two albums," said Petty. "Maybe this album does sound like that. But it's that band 30 years later... I knew I wanted to a do a rock and roll record. We hadn't made a straight hard-rockin' record, from beginning to end, in a long time."
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. Petty and the Heartbreakers were one of the bands on the forefront of the heartland rock movement. The genre eschews the synthesizer-based music and fashion elements popularized in the 1980s. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's best selling bands of all time.
"Ultimately, Hypnotic Eye is a record about the pure joy of sound, a rush that doesn't lessen upon repetition -- a sentiment that's true of those old '60s garage rock singles and early Heartbreakers albums, and this is a surprisingly, satisfyingly vigorous record." -Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic
