The W.S. Cox Plate is a Group 1 thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and over, held under weight-for-age conditions. Run over a distance of 2,040 metres, the prestigious race is held at The Valley Racecourse, Melbourne, annually in late October. The race is named in honour of William Samuel Cox, founder of the Moonee Valley Racing Club.
The W.S. Cox Plate marked a significant milestone in 2020, with the 100th running of the legendary horse race set to occur on 24 October 2020. It was first run on 28 October 1922, and in 1946 there were two races over two divisions.
The W. S. Cox Plate boasts an impressive list of winners, from champions such as Kingston Town and Phar Lap to modern-day superstars including Makybe Diva and Winx. Each of the 99 races has delivered memorable moments in horse racing history.
