A journey to Silverton begins at Durango. Tucked away in the San Juan Mountains in the southwestern corner of Colorado, Durango dates back to 1880, when the town literally sprang up overnight as the railroad reached the mining district that had grown up along the Animas River between Durango and Silverton during the 1870's. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, organized in Denver in 1870, had in ten short years crisscrossed the Rockies with more than six hundred miles of narrow-gauge track. The railroad struck out for the gold and silver camps as the fastest way to make money but was confident that other traffic would build up as the areas reached by the railroad grew and became developed.
Here Engine 345, the Durango yard switcher, stands near the depot, soaking up the late afternoon sun of a June day in 1950. The crew has taken a break while awaiting the 4:05 P.M. arrival of the San Juan from Alamosa. One of the last fully-equipped narrow-gauge trains anywhere on the continent, the San Juan left the connection with the Rio Grande's standard-gauge line at Alamosa at 7:00 in the morning for the 200-mile trip along the Colorado-New Mexico border to Durango. The 2-8-0 was built by Baldwin in Philadelphia in 1881, only a year after the rails first reached Durango.
