Five electric railway lines, besides the Johnstown Traction Company (the subject of a previous book), served the citizens of Cambria and adjoining counties. All five met with early demises; two failed financially, although all were marginal operations, and three folded due to accidents.
The largest of the five, the SOUTHERN CAMBRIA's story is one of daring, dispair, despiration, and defeat. The oldest, the NORTHERN CAMBRIA failed from the start financially and finally gave way to highway construction. The smallest, the PENN CENTRAL, never should have been built in the first place, as could be said of the JOHNSTOWN & SOMERSET. Included, since it operated partly under trolley overhead, the CAMBRIA & INDIANA, a railroad, ended passenger service due to a collision.
Altogether, these little railways operated 50 miles of track serviced by 26 cars, and through their lifespan, they battled the effects of the mountainous terrain. Which, in one way or another led to their demise.
I hope these pages will give the historian, resident, and enthusiast an idea of what the railway days were like in the Allegheny Mountains of Cambria County.
