STARTING THIS BOB MARLEY SET WE celebrate what would have been Bob Marley's 75th birthday last year, Island Records reissued the albums that the reggae legend released with the British label from 1973 to his death in 1983, with the addition of Legend, the greatest hits compilation that is one of the best selling albums of all time. And these fresh pressings were cut using half-speed mastering techniques WITH VERIFIED MARKETING STRIP ON THE LEFT SIDE OF EACH TITLE, which help beef up the sound of these already spectacular recordings. As Marley's fanbase has only grown and deepened over the years, all 12 albums sold out online quickly. But if you have an abiding interest in his work and want to hear it with clarity and intensity, you'd do well to hit your local shop or online resellers to find these. The sound of Marley and his crack backing band, which included Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in its earliest incarnation, is bulbous and thick on these reissues. The basswork of Aston 'Family Man' Barrett is given room to rumble, and the balance of elements, particularly the interplay between Marley and backing vocalists the I-Threes, is well-preserved. With the centenary of Marley's birth right around the corner, this won't be the last time Island finds a way to repackage and resell his work. But I'm skeptical that those future reissues will sound as good as these.

Bob Marley & The
Wailers Rastaman Vibration Half-Speed Mastered LP
Vinyl LP Half-Speed Mastered at Abbey Road Studios!
After conquering England on tour, Bob Marley returned to
Jamaica to record Rastaman Vibration with his band. The album, released in
1976, reached the Top 10 in the U.S.
Abbey Road's world-renowned engineers have been cutting
grooves into discs since the studios first opened their doors in 1931. These
records were pressed from master cuts using a precision technique known as
half-speed mastering. The procedure requires the source master and the cutting
lathe to run at half speed on a specially adapted Neumann VMS-80 lathe. This
rare and specialised technique transforms difficult to cut highend frequencies
into relatively easy to cut mid-range frequencies. The result is a cut with
excellent high frequency response and very solid and stable stereo images. In short,
half-speed mastering produces a master of the highest quality that enables the
pressing plant to produce a superlative record. - Miles Showell, Mastering

Vinyl LP Half-Speed Mastered at Abbey Road Studios!
Uprising (1980) would be the final studio album featuring
Bob Marley & The Wailers to be released during Marley's lifetime.
Prophetically, it also contains some of the band's finest crafted material, as
if they were cognizant that this would be their final outing. The album's blend
of religious and secular themes likewise creates a very powerful and singular
quest for spirituality in a material world.

Containing what is considered Marley's most defiant and
politically charged statement to date, Survival (1979) concerns itself with the
expressed solidarity of not only Africa, but of humanity at large. The album
was controversial right down to the jacket, which contains a crude schematic of
the stowage compartment of a typical transatlantic slave ship.

BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS - Birth Of a Legend - CALLA/CBS RECORDS ISSUE PZ34759
Limited Edition - ONE AND ONLY COPY FOREVER OF THIS OUT OF PRINT LIMITED EDITION
These 10 songs were originally issued on the late-'70s LPs Birth of a Legend and Early Music; this puts all of them on one, with the addition of liner notes on The Wailers' early years by Marley biographer Timothy White. Great heart and energy on these harmony-filled early ska stompers and soul ballads, and about half of these tracks are not included on the more comprehensive early Wailers retrospective One Love, making this a recommended addition to the library of both Wailers and general early ska/reggae fans. | |

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 169/500!
He was a zealous follower of the Rastafarian religion. And he was an unwilling political figure in the tumultuous politics of Jamaica. But to most, Bob Marley was the undisputed sovereign of reggae music, playing the primary role in the international popularization of the style. Exodus was released on Island Records in 1977, and became one of Marley's first albums to receive widespread attention in the United States. The tracks include some of his biggest international hits, such as the title track, Jamming, One Love/People Get Ready, Three Little Birds and Waiting In Vain.
Released at the time when reggae was gaining worldwide attention, Exodus is a prime example of the political and cultural nature of the art form that became a mouthpiece for both the Rastafarian religion and the cultural struggles of the Jamaican people. Subtitled Movement Of Jah People, the album carries a strong thematic religious message of the Rastas, and preaches of the glorious end to the suffering of all Jah's people.
This is seriously another quintessential classic album which needs to be in everyone's collection.
"The Album of the Century" - Time Magazine
"As the title suggests, this album wasn't recorded in Jamaica; after Marley took a bullet in a 1976 assassination attempt, he relocated the Wailers to London. But tracks such as "Jammin'" are still suffused with the deep essence of reggae and life at home. "Three Little Birds," for example, had been written on the back step of Marley's home in Kingston, where he would sit and smoke herb. Each time Marley rolled a spliff, he would discard the seeds — the birds of the song's title would pick them up. "The music have a purpose," Marley said, and his spiritual intent was never clearer than on the anthem "One Love." -

New Unreleased Performances on 180g Vinyl Double LP!
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Easy Skanking In Boston ’78, features two historic live shows from Boston’s Music Hall on June 8, 1978. This new and unreleased performance is from the Marley family giving unprecedented access for the first time to their personal material from their private collections and their vaults.
Highlights of the performance include a lively “Jammin’” and “The Heathen,” a song Marley and the band didn’t perform during the second set. The show features them at their most comfortable, truly enjoying themselves in the spotlight, basking in the appreciation of the audience.
Marley, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is notable not only as the man who put reggae on the global map, but, as a statesman in his native Jamaica, he famously brought together the country’s warring factions — symbolized by rival politicians Michael Manley and Edward Siega joining hands on-stage — during his legendary “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston, which took place on April 22, 1978, less than six weeks before this Music Hall performance in Boston.
It was two years since Marley and the band arrived from Jamaica, with the 1977 release of Exodus recorded in London just after an assassination attempt on his life, turned into not just a socio-political statement, but one which included such hits as the title track, “Waiting In Vain” and “One Love,” paving the way for their next release Kaya and a world tour in ’78. Together with his music’s theme of liberation, Marley’s own rags-to-riches story brought inspiration to subjugated people around the world, where he was revered as a larger-than-life leader.

While Rasta Revolution contains the duplicate cuts "400 Years" and "Duppy Conqueror" from African Herbsman and is from roughly the same early-'70s period, there is a distinctly mellow feel to the record. Souful and subdued bass-led roots tracks are the foundation here, as exemplified by the pulsing "Try Me" and the playful yet stinging "Rebel's Hop." Produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, Rasta Revolution contains some tracks that rank among the best music Bob Marley & the Wailers were to produce. Most notable is the stirring "Soul Rebel," which features a beautiful blending of Marley's plaintive singing accompanied by the Wailers' tight backing harmonies. Also excellent are "Reaction," the very danceable "It's Alright," and of course, the almost psychedelic "Mr. Brown." While not quite as consistent as African Herbsman and Catch a Fire, Rasta Revolution captures Bob Marley & the Wailers at their peak. - All Music Guide
