FAIR TRADE STORY
Our Brazil Nut Oil is sourced from the Madre de Dios region of Peru. They are better known as Amazon Nuts in the communities that collect them, since they grow across the rainforests of Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia. The trees grow wild and are one of the giants of the rainforest—often standing tall for hundreds of years. By sourcing our oil for your products, you give value to the bounty of these incredible forests.
Each nutshell from the Brazil tree is collected by local castanheiros (or castañeros) during the torrential rainy season, from January to March. Collection is usually quite far from communities, so we support the castanheiros by financing their long weeks of harvest at no interest. We also provide harvesting platforms to ensure that they have the most viable amount of nuts by keeping them safe from the heavy rains. The harvest is then loaded and hand carried by the castanheiros until they can reach the river for transportation. Since the wild harvest of Amazon Nuts coincides with the start of the school year, many use the money they earn for school supplies, books, and pay for better teachers.
Candela Peru is leading the way to a better future for people and the planet. Headquartered in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, Candela has spent 30 years connecting the bounty of the rainforest to clean beauty rituals. And they continue to lead the industry as an ethical and socially responsible natural and organic supplier.
Sustainability / Biodiversity / Fair Trade:
These aren't buzzwords, they are Candela Peru's beliefs. Their history is steeped in a deep commitment to biodiversity, regenerative practices, and fair trade principles. Every bit of the butters and oils they make come from local and indigenous producers. By supporting these small suppliers that wildcraft, cultivate, and sustainably harvest the best that the Andes and Amazon have to offer, they are able to enhance and empower the communities they come from. They do this by putting 100% of their surplus back into the environment and the lives of the people who protect it.
