in his renowned guise as Charles Dickens brings a whole cornucopia of
the author's characters to life in his vivid readings of selective
extracts and short stories. These include the circus side-show story Mr.
Chops (from 1858's Christmas Stories) and choice selections from The
Pickwick Papers, Our Mutual Friend, A Tale of Two Cities and Dombey and
Sons. Then Ralph Richardson (1902 - 1983) provides us with a
compellingly crumpled and extra thorny Scrooge in a fully realised
production of A Christmas Carol. Complete with imagination stirring
sound effects and expertly supported by a full cast that includes
Douglas Wilmer and Willoughby Goddard with Paul Scofield as the
narrarator. Equally pleasingly creaky and shiver down the spine creepy,
this historic 1960 production sets out to transport the listener to a
chilly, dimly lit and grimly 1840s London. With the cities' people,
apart from Ebenezer Scrooge that is, making their very best effort,
whatever their predicaments, to celebrate Christmas. It will take four
terrifying visitations to persuade Scrooge to see Christmas very
differently. As a bonus track there is also included a vintage low
fidelity radio production of 'The Queer Client'* (from The Pickwick
Papers).
