The year is 1871: The government commissions former Indian hunter Johnny McKay (Alan Ladd) to lead peace negotiations with the Modocs in Oregon. Part of the tribe, led by the rebellious Kintpuash alias Captain Jack (Charles Bronson), has fled the reservation and is claiming the settlers' territory for themselves. McKay and Kintpuash are old rivals who respect each other but otherwise fight on different sides. Kintpuash wants to use Allen means possible to avoid bowing to the white men again.
