An original hand colored illustration by Leonard B. Lubin for a proposed publication based on the famous love story "Desirée" by Annemarie Selinko. Desirée Clary , when jilted by Napoleon, eventually became Queen of Norway and Sweden

Leonard Lubin was known primarily for his illustrations for children's books in which the characters are typically dressed in exotic and colorful costume based upon the artist's obsession with 18th. century fashions. Lubin, who grew up in Detroit and won a scholarship to the John Herron School of Art in Indiana, was awarded the American Book Award for illustration for "Birthday of the Infanta". Other books that won him acclaim were "The Elegant Beasts", "The Perfect Peach" and "The Pig Tale"

Lubin was a brilliant artist whose original pencil sketches submitted to the publishers required minimal refinement for final submission with added hand coloring. In an interview with Lubin published in the 1989 book "Behind The Covers" by Jim Roginski, Lubin explains the accuracy of his draft renderings and quotes his work in "The Perfect Peach" in which he "did a complete pencil dummy which is almost exactly like the final book" - see scan.

Lubin executed eight plates for this project but it appears that the book was never published. Also included is the printer's proof of this image - see scan

Good condition. Page size 10 x 7 inches - image size 6 x 4 inches.

A fascinating insight into the book illustration process. I have a large collection of Lubin's original art and have listed several examples on Ebay
