‘A Treasury of Poetry’ is an accessible anthology of some of the most memorable and cherished poems written between the Elizabethan age and the early 20th Century. The recognizable voices of Claire Bloom, Eric Portman, John Neville, Michael Hordern, John Laurie, Robert Donat, Pauline Letts, C. Day Lewis, Dylan Thomas, V.C. Clinton-Baddeley and Wilfred Pickles bring to life the words of a wide variety of poets. These are thoughtful, tender, understated, charismatic, exciting or dramatic readings that reflect the skill of the readers and the brilliance of the written word. The set also incorporates a complete reissue of the 1955 collection ‘Poets Gold’ featuring readings by Hollywood Golden Age era actors Helen Haynes, Thomas Mitchell and Raymond Massey. - To just briefly mention a handful of the poets featured: Following on from the work of Shakespeare and Donne, you have Milton and Dryden. Most of the Romantic poets are strongly represented including Keats, Shelley, Byron and Wordsworth. Landing in the heart of the Victorian age, we have Browning and Tennyson, plus the pleasing rhymes of Lewis Carroll, R. L. Stevenson (from A Child's Garden of Verses) and Edward Lear. The 19th Century American Fireside Poets movement is also represented, including the work of Longfellow and Whittier. There is the visually inspiring work of Walt Whitman. Finally, concluding with the 20th Century work of Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy and, touchingly, war poet Wilfred Owen. There are poems of epic storytelling and drama, again by Tennyson and Coleridge (The Revenge, The Lady of Shalott and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner) and more light hearted pieces by Leigh-Hunt, Fitton and Swinburne (Jenny Kissed Me, Eawr Sarah’s Getten a Chap and A Child’s Laughter).
