THE GREAT EXPLORERS

(PIERS PENNINGTON)

Here is the story of the world's great adventures into the unknown, told through the lives of the explorers who dared go where no one had gone before.

Each chapter deals with an age or area of discovery, from the early Egyptian sea voyages to the modern race for the South Pole.  Da Gama and Columbus, Magellan and Hudson, Bering and Cook, Livingstone and Amundsen – these are just some of the most famous of the over 50 explorers in this book.  Theirs are now classic tales of sheer courage, strong conviction, and often personal hardship.  They filled in the map of the world, first by outlining the coasts and then by penetrating the interiors of Asia, the Americas, Africa, Australasia, the Arctic, and the Antarctic.

Among the numerous illustrations are old maps that show the world as it was believed to be at the time that various expeditions of discovery were setting out.  In all, the book offers an unusual and interesting approach to one of the most fascinating of all human endeavours – the journey into the unknown.
