Earl Stetson Crawford, original etching on wove paper entitled Porte a Sospel #1 Cote d'Azur, signed E. Stetson Crawford in pencil beneath the image in the lower right, numbered #10/30 1st State in pencil in the lower left on the back of the sheet and #10/30 1st State in the lower left on the front of the sheet, also marked in pencil on the lower edge of the back of the sheet the full title, and the date and place of the etching, Paris, France on February 10, 1935, the image size about being 5 3/4 by 6 1/2 inches on a sheet of paper about 9 by 12 inches, in good condition (the print is creased in several places).  This etching comes from a Pasadena, California estate where the artist settled after moving from France before the start of World War II. 

 

Earl Stetson Crawford (1877-1966), painter, printmaker, muralist and illustrator, was born in Philadelphia on June 5, 1877, the grandson of the hat-maker, John B. Stetson.  He studied at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and in Paris at Académie Julian, École des Beaux-Arts, Académie Delécluse, and Académie Carmen, where he was a student of James McNeill Whistler. He also received training in Munich, London, Rome, Florence, and Venice. Crawford taught at the School of Applied Design for Women in New York between 1912 and 1917. He had studios in New York and Nutley, New Jersey in the early years of his career.

 

After serving in World War I, Crawford and his wife, Brenetta Bimm Herrman, moved to southern France in 1923. They were forced to return to the United States in the 1930s due to the outbreak of World War II. Crawford then moved to California where he established himself in Pasadena and devoted himself to printmaking.

 

Crawford was a member of the American Art Association of Paris, the Society of Illustrators, the Artist Fund Society, the Société des Arts et Lettres, Associe de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and the Société des Graveurs. His work is represented in the collections of the New York Public Library; Rijks Museum, Amsterdam; Christchurch Museum, New Zealand; Smithsonian American Art Museum; and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

 

Earl Stetson Crawford died in Pasadena, California on September 13, 1966.
