No-hitter a history maker

Johnson throws first No-hitter in Mariners 14-year existence

SEATTLE -- The tallest pitcher in the majors made short work of the Detroit Tigers Saturday night.  He no-hit them.  Randy Johnson, a 6-foot-10 left-hander, tossed the first no-hitter in the history of the Seattle Mariners and the Kingdome, beating the Tigers 2-0.  The 25-year-old Johnson (4-3) walked six and needed two good plays behind him to record the first no-hitter in Mariners history.  Third baseman Edgar Martinez ranged far to his left for Chet Lemon's grounder in the fourth inning, and Martinez also threw out Tracy Jones on a close play in the seventh.  Other than that, Johnson waded through the Tigers like a giant stork on a mission.  When Mike Heath chased a high fastball for a third strike to end the game, the 12th no-hitter thrown against the Tigers, Johnson raised his arms in triumph.  Until then, however, he'd shown no emotion at all.  "I'm speechless," he said. "It's a feeling I can't describe.  All I can say is that it was an unreal feeling.  I'm really drained."  Johnson threw 87 strikes and 49 balls.  The Mariners said he had 50 pitches of 94 mph and more.  His final pitch, to strike out Heath, was clocked at 97 mph, his fastest of the game.  "I'm a power pitcher," he said.  "I give up a lot of home runs. (Catcher) Scott Bradley and I talked about it before the game.  We decided I had to throw my fastball inside."  Johnson struck out three of the last four batters he faced, but he had to get through the heart of the lineup to secure his place in the record book.  He struck out Cecil Fielder to start the ninth, then retired Chet Lemon on a foul to first and ended the game by striking out Heath.  The no-hitter was the first against the Tigers since Nolan Ryan's gem on July 15, 1973, at Tiger Stadium, and the first on the road against the Tigers since Chicago's Joel Horlen on Sept. 10, 1967.

Randy Johnson’s 11th start of the 1990 season came vs. the Detroit Tigers on June 2 at the Kingdome. The 6-foot-10 left-hander toed the rubber and delivered the first pitch of the game to Tigers leadoff batter Tony Phillips at 7:10 p.m. Randy entered the start with an inauspicious record of 3–3 and a 4.73 ERA, but over the next 2-hours and 41-minutes, he delivered the first no-hitter in Mariners history.  The Big Unit began the historic outing with a strikeout of Phillips and ended it with a strikeout of Mike Heath. In between, he worked around 6 walks and a fielding error but held Detroit without a hit. He harnessed both power in striking out 8 and wildness in walking 6 in a 2–0 win over the Tigers.  The defense playing behind Randy that night is a who’s who of Mariners legends: Harold Reynolds led off and played 2nd base while Alvin Davis manned 1st base, Ken Griffey Jr. patrolled center field, Edgar Martinez started at 3rd base and Jay Buhner roamed right field.  Johnson’s no-hitter marked his 1st of 6 consecutive wins as he went 11–8 with a 3.25 ERA over his final 23 starts of the season. He was named to his 1st of 10 career All-Star appearances in 1990 and finished with a record of 14–11 and a 3.65 ERA.
