Originally conceived by Hammer as a sequel to Quatermass' hit 1955 SHOCK, and prepared by American-blacklisted master director Joseph Losey, who had to pull out of the project after a week of shooting, but whose dark dystopia of nuclear catastrophe is still palpable and terrifying is.

At a British Army training ground in northern Scotland, a sudden explosion has caused a deep crack across the site. A murderous mass is crawling out of the earth's interior, a lava flow-like mush that develops a ravenous hunger for any kind of nuclear material. Horribly burned corpses line his path. Nothing can stop the amorphous monster on its way to a nearby nuclear test laboratory. The army's weapons prove ineffective against the invader from Hell. The walls of the laboratory are already breaking...
