Dying, we live: The personal chronicle of a young freedom fighter in Warsaw, 1939-1945
LANGUAGE: ENGLISH
VG CONDITION, HARDCOVER

In 1948, at the age of 19, Julian E Kulski came to the United States as a decorated Home Army war veteran and a political refugee from Soviet-occupied Poland.

He joined the Underground Army in 1941 when he was 12 and was arrested by the Gestapo, tortuered, and sentenced to Auschwitz. After he was rescued, h enjoined the Commandos and fought in the Warsaw Uprising. He was captured and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. After escaping, he went to Ireland. While at Portora Royal School, he won the Oxford and Cambridge Certificate. His father, Julian S. Kulski, fought with Pilsudski Legions in World War I and the 1920-21 Polish-Soviet War. During World War II, as President of Warsaw, he represented the Polish Government in Exile. He was a fierce protector of the Underground Army. His mother, Eugina Solecka, descended from the King of Poland, Stanislaw Leszczynski, father-in-law of King of France Louis XV.

A 1954 graduate of Yale University with a Master of Architecture degree and the holder of a 1966 doctorate from the Warsaw Institute of Technology, Dr. Kulski led the urban and regional planning program at Notre Dame University and at George Washington University and later established the first city planning program at Howard University. Early in his career his interest in the relation between his native and his adoptive countries manifested itself in a study, undertaken at Yale, of the affinities between Polish and American colonial architecture. His may subsequently published works in his field include Land of Urban Promise, which became a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, and Architecture in a Revolutionary Era. As a leading American architect, he was named Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, with fewer than 2 percent of American architects having thus been distinguished. Dr. Kulski's more than 3,000 building in 29 countries have had a significant influence in shaping the developing world. His memoir, Dying We Live, recounts his harrowing and inspiring experiences as a 10-to-15-year-old boy in German-occuipied Waraw. His father's position as President of the City of Warsaw did not prevent the young Julian from becoming first a courier for the resistance, at which time he was arrested and released; and then a Commando during the Warsaw Uprising, when he was again taken prisoner and this time transported to Germany but ultimately liberated by the Americans. More recently he has published for middle and high school students a version of his wartime experiences, consider by reviewers as a companion piece to The Diary of Anne Frank, titled Legacy of the White Eagle, as well as an award-winning documentary at www.whiteeaglelegacy.com.

Julian Kulski is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Polish Center and the Cosmos Club in Washington DC and is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Polish America. In 2004 he took part in CNN's documentary "Warsaw Rising". He is a recipient of Poland's Cross of Valor, Silver Cross of Merit with Swords, Polish Army's Medal (4 times), and a Cross of the Warsaw Uprising. In 1979 he was appointed Honorary Admiral by the Governor of Alabama.

In July 2007, Julian Kulski was decorated by the Minister of Defense on behalf of the President of Poland in ceremonies held at the Washington Embassy with the Commander's Cross of Merit with Star of the Polish Republic for service to Poland.

Dr. Kulski has two sons, Julian and Stefan. He is married to Catherine Yerkes Kulski and lives in Washington, DC.
