O'cean  (leggesi o-si-an) è un melodico ed anestetico assemblaggio musicale finalizzato alla rielaborazione lucida e consapevole del lutto, per quel che riguarda il rapporto consumato e perduto dell' uomo con la natura . Il flauto manierista e narcolettico del pacato e misurato menestrello Larkin si armonizza delicatamente con registrazioni sonore originali del cantico delle megattere(megaptera novaeangliae / humpback whale) , enormi balene dalle grandi pinne pettorali che solcano in libertà gli sterminati bacini d' acqua oceanici del nostro malandato e decadente pianeta. In sottofondo il tenace e caparbio sintetizzatore artificiale ed ecologico di Stearns con un sapiente e dosato equilibrio ritmico rende possibile ed effettiva la serena e gradevolissima compatibilità di due sorgenti sonore altrimenti antitetiche ed inconciliabili . Album realizzato in origine per la Wind Sung Sounds nel 1979, questa riedizione sempre su vinile del 1985 annuncia tramite l' adesivo in copertina un ipoteticamente rinnovato lato 2, probabilmente (da verificare, però) solo a livello di masterizzazione, perchè la durata della facciata (è un brano unico) è praticamente identica a quella della prima versione.

O'cean  , pronounced OH-SEE-ON , was a year and one half in making. The scope of this recording required me to surrender to a new form of music making. Joining me in the studio was a dancer, to help co-create the music. Playing my flute to the dancer's fluid interpretation of my music and a shared idea, provided the groundwork this new form needed for expression. It is the joining of my music with the movement that unfolded the beauty of the recording.

Sounds of the ocean and humpback whales open this classic recording. Then Larkin's flute slowly enters and develops themes that mix perfectly, elevated above the sustained synthesizer chords of Michael Stearns.



The original album was released in 1979 by Wind Sung Sounds, Standord CA on vinyl as "O'cean (oh-see-on) Flute music through Larkin."

Narada re-released this 1980 new age classic with Teldec quality mastering. Here, Larkin plays flute improvisations keyed to the pulse of the ocean waves and the songs of the humpback whales. For "Emergence," Michael Stearns adds appropriate synthesizer tones, just enough to create a sympathetic organ drone, rather like an extended "aum." Larkin's flute takes an unhurried approach, simulating the long gentle undulations of the whale's movements or perhaps the soaring of seagulls overhead. In this remastering, the groans, squeals, and chirps of the whalesongs (from a mother humpback and her pod, according to the liner notes) and the surf are very crisp. "Communitizing" features just solo flute, echoed, gracefully dancing over the waves. Larkin notes that dancers in the studio helped create the fluid interpretation. Accents of seagull cries help set the scene. There have been many similar albums merging reflective music and nature sounds; O'cean is one that helped set the standard.
