This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing.   This sample features an Ole O. Kittleson patent, dated May 7, 1878.  This wire is called "Kittleson's Half Hitch Medium Sized Square Wire Barb," by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 444-B).  This wire features two twisted together round line wires.  Barbs are two pointed and made from flattened round barbing stock.  Barbing stock has two flat sides.  Barb is wrapped around line wire, and then back around itself in a half-hitch style of knot.  Barbs are on one line only.  Barbs are medium size being about 1" in total length as applied.   Wire sample shows light pitting.  Sample is 18" in length, and has four barbs.  Barbs are well spaced, and cut is well centered.   There is some light bending of points but no broken, or missing barbing points.
