GENESIS - ABACAB -
OUT OF PRINT IMPORT Vinyl Reissue! Abacab is the 11th studio album by British band Genesis. Once again the chart topping album "Abacab" features the deadly trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford at their commercial zenith. Although not a singles band, Genesis still kept a healthy line of hits rolling (especially in the US) with releases like solid rocking "Keep It Dark," the Earth, Wind & Fire assisted "No Reply At All," the pounding title track "Abacab," and the atmospheric "Man In The Corner." "Abacab" would become Genesis' best-selling album in the US so far, selling 2 million units in the process before future albums "Genesis," "Invisible Touch," and "We Can't Dance" cleaned-up throughout the rest of the '80s and the early '90s. The sound is more synth-oriented but sparingly arranged, with less of a dense texture than previous albums. The result has been called art rock. Genesis have always been known for their sense of spectacle and their groundbreaking live shows, as much as their ambitious studio albums like the evergreen Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Over the last four decades, the group has sold 150 million albums worldwide and has influenced the likes of Elbow, Flaming Lips, and Jeff Buckley. "...truly modern art rock, their last album that could bear that tag comfortably." -Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic Selections: Side One: 1. Abacab 2. No Reply At All 3. Me and Sarah Jane 4. 1983's Genesis scored No. 9 on Billboard's pop albums chart,
their second consecutive LP to hit the Top 10. Highlights include the hit
singles "Mama," "That's All," and "Taking It All Too
Hard." Where its predecessor Abacab had already represented a best in
terms of record sales, Genesis doubled it, bringing over-the-counter sales in
the U.S. to a staggering 4 million copies. Includes the huge hits
"Mama" and "That's All."
Genesis: Mike Rutherford (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Banks
(vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at The
Farm, Surrey, England in 1983. Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio
of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants
had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop
portions. GENESIS was an important bridge to this goal. Coupled with
frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the
band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public.
Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members
(particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in
which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins. Driven by
Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first
hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous
"Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster
the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to
Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated
into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious
stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home
By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."

LASTLY FOR THE COLLECTOR - PHIL COLLINS BOTH SIDES 2015 REMASTERED 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE LP SET
- When Both Sides came out in November of 1993. The record company didn't promote it and neither did VH1 or MTV. When I listened to it, I thought this is Phil Collins at his most serious. It seems to me that Phil was trying to say something without the typical humor he uses. Perhaps it is because the nature of the music is so serious. I happen to like it when an artist bares his soul, and Phil did an excellent job here. I have all of his solo ALBUMS and all of Genesis' as well, and I have to say that Both Sides is probably Phil's best solo LP. Sure, No Jacket Required has all the hits and is very well produced. Sure, Face Value and Hello, I Must Be Going are very good LPS as well, but Both Sides touches an emotional nerve that those others do not. Listen to the intimacy Phil exudes on such songs as "Can't Turn Back The Years" and "I've Forgotten Everything." Listen to the messages imbedded in "Both Sides Of The Story" and "We're Sons Of Our Fathers." I can't think of Phil being so honest with his feelings as he is on this album. It's not the typical, uptempo Phil that most fans enjoy, it's more mature and painful. Both Sides is a must have for any rock collector
