Description
Xavier Miramontes, color etching, signed, titled Mikey's World, and numbered 26/30 in pencil beneath the image, 8 by 12 inches printed on a sheet of handmade paper measuring 15 by19 inches, in excellent as new condition. The print is mounted on a slightly larger piece of heavy paper and enclosed in a sealed plastic envelope as sold by the Warnock Fine Arts Gallery, Palm Springs, California. The gallery has also included a one-page biography of the artist in the envelope behind the etching.
According to his biography, Xavier Miramontes was born in Richmond, California, received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and then received an MA in Printmaking from San Francisco State. In the 1970s, he worked with the Galleria De La Raza of San Francisco on a number of billboard/mural projects. He also designed a poster for the United Farmworkers Union, Boycott Grapes, which is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of America Art, Washington, DC, and other institutions. On a yearly basis, he participates in shows and print competitions throughout the United States and Europe. His work has been shown in Tokyo, Mexico City, Puerto Rico, and Amsterdam. He has won various awards including the James D. Phelan Award in Printmaking in 1993. He teaches printmaking at City College of San Francisco.
In describing his work, the artist has stated "I have been a printmaker for more than 20 years. I specialize in multiple plate etchings. By combining 4 zinc plates, I can develop images with a high degree of detail and a full range of colors. My work, which is narrative, colorful, and sometimes humorous, is meant to be viewed as a celebration of life."
