The impact and discovery site of the meteorite Campo del Cielolocated in the vast territory of the Gran Chaco,

ranging from southern Bolivia to Paraguay and to the northeastern end of Argentina. In 1576 parts of this meteorite were discovered for the first time. He then sent out an expedition that brought back several fragments. The place where it was found, an arid plain, was aptly named Campo del Cielo (Field of Heaven). Approx. 200 years later, the Spanish sent another expedition because it was suspected that some fragments contained silver.

However, the reports of the Indians were not believed, since the Spaniards assumed that the metal came from an ore mine. A naval lieutenant allegedly found a fragment that he estimated at 15 to 18 tons. However, when the material was examined and found to be just iron, it was left behind. The fragment was never found again in subsequent later expeditions.

In 1992, an American meteorite dealer was briefly arrested when he tried to transport the heaviest fragment found so far, which weighed 37t (!!). The dealer had bought the meteorite from a local who claimed to be the rightful owner of the fragment. However, the Argentine authorities did not agree with this and the meteorite remained in the country.

The total amount of meteorite material found so far is over 100t. The larger fragments are found around an area of ​​26 craters. The largest crater is 78 m in diameter and 5 m deep.

The age of the craters was determined by radiocarbon analysis of petrified wood found near the craters. Accordingly, the impact of the meteoroid is said to have taken place 4000 to 6000 years ago.

The original asteroid came from the asteroid belt and the fragments are classified as coarse Group IA octahedrites. Chemical composition: 92.6% iron, 6.68% nickel, 0.43% cobalt, 0.25% phosphorus, 87 ppm gallium, 407 ppm germanium and 3.6 ppm iridium.

Danger! Another note: Since the Campo del Cielo is an iron meteorite, it can rust if it comes into contact with skin (salty sweat) or if left on while showering. On the other hand, you can paint the meteorite with nail polish (because it has been dermatologically tested and is harmless).

Otherwise wear on top of clothing and take off when showering and at night.
