This time the collection focuses on rarely heard archive treasures with the emphasis very much on the dramatic!!! Productions that should grab your attention, take hold of your imagination and transport you into that Dickensian landscape of the gloomy, dank, soot covered London, a windswept English marsh or coast and France during The Terror, and still all awhile you are sitting, snugly nestled, listening in your armchair. The recordings feature a host of renowned character actors of the time, these include Milo O’Shea, Siobhán McKenna, Ralph Michael, Anew McMaster and Frank Pettingell. Many of whom would go on to have long and highly distinguished careers. Included are vibrant, full cast, productions of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ as well as Pettingell’s impressive one man ‘tour de force’ performances, where he colourfully serves up some of Dickens’ most cherished (or reviled) characters for the delight of the listener. The post-war era was a very fertile one for adaptations of Dickens, especially on the cinema screen. These recordings come from that same era and arguably share many of the same discernible qualities as their visual counterpoint. The cosy warmth and charisma of the 1951 Alastair Sim version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ (Scrooge) can also be felt on this production from 1959 with its sparkling performances and appropriate soundtrack ambience that very much adds to the overall spooky atmosphere which, in turn, gives way to the full joyfulness of the season . The gripping tension of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ is fully realised by a large cast which is further aided by the students of the Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art. This provides a thrilling and memorably rich listening experience that features many of the key plot moments of this, years-spanning, epic and that unforgettable, celebrated ending."
