Bench's Bunt for 1,000 Big Hit With Reds' Fans
Bench Gets Nice, Clean Ball For His Souvenir Case
New Reds' Act Has Successful Debut
Chaney's 1st Grand Slam
CINCINNATI - Johnny Bench, the guy the Reds pay $150,000 to splinter chairs beyond the outfield walls for homers, bunted for a hit in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Cardinals.  Of his last fourt hits, it was his third bunt single.  The other one was a home run.  And, guess what?  Johnny Lee Bench received a standing ovation for his Sunday bunt.  That his was the 1,000th of his career.  When the announcement was made, the 46,016 put down their beer and popcorn, stood and paid tribute to a guy who is booed more than any Cincinnati Red at home.  The appreciative Bench doffed his plastic batting helmet as he stood on the first base bag.  THE BUNT was perfection - a roller down the third base line on which St. Louis third baseman Kenny Reitz had no play.  "Sure, I would like to have made my 1,000th a homer, but I hit a homer for my 999th.  Maybe my 1,001st will be a homer.  Anyway, if I had hit a homer for the 1,000th, I might not have gotten the ball back."  First base umpire Tom Gorman handed John the ball, which will find its way into John's restaurant trophy room.  On Bench's first at bat against rookie Bob Forsch, making his initial major league start, John jerked one far enough for a homer, but it was foul.  Then, he struck out.  And, struck out again.  And grounded out.  Now, it was the eighth with one out, Rich Folkers pitching, and the Reds on top, 2-1.  "I had gone six at bats without a hit since hitting the homer for 999 off Bob Gibson," said Bench.  "It was time for drastic action."  Hence, the bunt.  Does John remember his first major league hit?  "A double down the left field line off Philadelphia's Chirs Short.  A lot of water had flowed under the bridge since then."  Now, Bench is the No. 2 vote-getter behind Hank Aaron for an All-Star berth.  Asked if he might be somewhat embarrassed over his .251 batting average as an All-Star, Bench replied:  "Well, somewhat embarrassed.  But they pick you for all facets, I do have 50 ribbies and 15 homers.  I'm no .300 hitter.  My lifetime average is .268 so I'm not that far off."  "Certainly I've heard the boos a couple of times," said Bench.  "But I've heard the chers, too, and the one today was quite a thrill."
