MICHAEL JORDAN tied a CAREER HIGH 18 REBOUNDS, GRABBING MORE THAN EITHER DENNIS RODMAN (17) or SHAWN KEMP (4).

Jordan responds to playoff like atmosphere with 32 points, 18 rebounds and game-winning free throws.
CHICAGO (AP) -- Michael Jordan was weary after Tuesday night's game, and with good reason.  Jordan played 50 minutes, scored 32 points, hit the game-winning free throws in overtime and matched a career high with 18 rebounds as the Chicago Bulls, needing everything Jordan could provide, beat the Seattle SuperSonics 89-87 in a playoff-like meeting between last year's NBA finalists.  "This is the kind of high intensity atmosphere we're going to see for a month in the playoffs, so why not try it now?" Jordan said.  "I was determined that I would carry my load and some extra.  I was able to make my free throws.  We had to find a way to win.  I feel great.  I feel tired."  Seattle's Gray Payton, who finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 14 assists, hit a free throw with 16 secons left to tie it 87-87 but missed a second shot from the line that would have given Seattle the lead.  The Bulls rebounded and Jordan, surrounded by Seattle defenders, put up a wild shot.  But he was fouled by Payton and sank both free throws, his fifth and sixth of overtime.  "He lost the ball and I didn't fould anybody," Payton said. "We did a great job and played great defense.  It's heartbreaking for us and I hope we get a chance to play them again."  Seattle coach George Karl said he wouldn't talk about the play on which Jordan was fouled.  But he offered an opinion.  "Everybody in the world knows there's a double standard here," said Karl, whose team lost to the Bulls 4-2 in the finals last June.  "But that's part of it.  You got to win a championship.  It's the old cliche of knocking out the world champion in boxing."  Jordan disputed the double standard claim.  "That's garbage," he said. "I got a silly foul on the other end I didn't think was a fould. ...I disagree with that."  After Jordan's two free throws with three seconds left gave the Bulls the lead, Seattle's Hersey Hawkins, who earlier hit two 3-pointers in overtime to give the Sonics an 86-83 lead, missed a shot at the buzzer.  The Bulls, who escaped with their 25th straight home victory, also beat the Sonics in an earlier regular-season meeting at Seattle.  "We defended our homecourt and we proved we can win there.  They didn't prove they can win here," Jordan said.  The Sonics forced overtime when Payton hit three free throws after he was fouled by Luc Longley with 20.8 seconds left in regulation.  Early Tuesday morning, Payton was accused by a limousine driver of punching him in the face over a fare dispute.  Chicago's Scottie Pippen and Seattle's Shawn Kemp both missed overtime after fouling out in the closing seconds of regulation.  Hawkins had 23 points for the Sonics, while Longley added 16 for the Bull.  The Bulls, now 32-1 at home, didn't lead until Longley hit a bank shot with 2:28 to go to make it 74-73.
