An exquisite 7 7/8 inches tall (to the top of the stopper) hexagonal six-sided beautiful DEEP PURPLE AMETHYST color antique perfume bottle. This is a PAUL RIEGER Company perfume bottle, from old SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA I believe. It has a lot going for it. It is 1) EMBOSSED, 2)it has an embossed GLASS STOPPER, and 3)it has PAPER LABELS. Though the bottle is a beautiful deep lavender color, the stopper is a burnt amber or 'TOPAZ' color, as this color is often referred to**. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) bottle with a tooled top, dating back to the 1800's.
What a great looking large antique 'dresser' bottle. This is the kind of bottle that sat out on a ladies dresser to dispense perfume or cologne out of, as the bottle is so ornate it was worthy of display. In the same way, by making these large fancy dresser bottles, Paul Rieger advertised his name in a place for all passerby's to see. This is one of the nicer antique Rieger perfume bottles that there ever could be! So many of these LARGE antique perfume bottles are not embossed, have no label, have the wrong stopper, and are just plain bottles. Yet this one has all of that, multiples of some, and then it has the color too! Just the color alone sets this one part, the deep amethyst color. This coloring is the result of the presence of manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the glass clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. Many of our amethyst bottles have been purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight, others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a box, and still others have been purpled by running them through a sterilization (radiation) process, a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. Though some "purists" will suggest that this lavender color has been artificially produced or altered, the only thing that is artificial or altered is the time period it took to turn purple. Whether a bottle has been purpled by the sun, by UV rays in a box, or by a sterilization process, they all turn the same purple color as it is the same chemical reaction taking place. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Here is an example of just this thing, and not only does this complement the otherwise ornate bottle, but it also authenticates it as a true antique, a true antique.
