Stanislav Vincenz (1888—1971) talks about the archaic folk culture of the Hutsuls, the creation of mythical and magical thinking based on beliefs about the cyclical change of time and denial of the existence of history. In addition to the main narrator, the story is led by the heroes of the work, often real historical characters. The author paid special attention to the figure of Oleksa Dovbush.
In three parts of the book ("By the Voice of Trembita", "Forest People", "History of Sloboda, or the End of Opryshkivstva"), a multi-colored mosaic of real and legendary characters, parables, songs, ethnological essays from the Hutsul Region unfolds. Different genres are intertwined here: poetic prose, legend, journalism.
